The Young 72 is a design that is close to my heart. My profession is sailing, but my main sports are windsurfing and surfing. Its where I met all my friends and its what I love to do whenever the opportunity is there. The Young 72 is a design that has special purpose. It is a very exciting concept and coincidently follows on from a surfing trip on the Young 85 Tsunami that I shared with 13 of my surfing friends in 2005. The experiences gained from this trip made us think how amazing it would be to experience these types of adventures on a purpose designed cat and live the dream.
The concept for this design was to provide a large high performance catamaran that could accommodate not only 10 people for long periods, but also all the gear and equipment needed to create extreme adventures to the most exotic locations in the world. What sets this cat apart from any other existing design is that it has been purpose designed to accommodate up to 14 x surfboards of various sizes up to 12 long boards, 4 x 12 paddle boards, 10 x windsurfers (variety of sizes, 12 x kite boards, 2 x 20 kayaks, 8 mountain bikes/road bikes, Scuba diving and snorkelling equipment for 10 people, 1 x 20 RIB (max size) and a 12 Inflatable dinghy. Make no mistake this is an extraordinary wish list of equipment and fundamental to the design concept.
The Young 72 can not only accommodate this significant payload of toys, but can also deliver stunning performance to make getting there almost as much fun as being there. This design is state of the art and sailing it will be an experience few people will ever know (outside of Grand prix racing cats).
One of its main features is the vast open plan saloon. This is a huge social area and the galley has been designed to be fully interactive with all that is going on. The galley/dining area is inspired by a Japanese sushi bar. If you have ten people onboard all needing to be fed, it invariably will end up with one or two people doing the cooking and it will be hard to serve everyone at once and the people cooking will be cut off from any socializing and miss the action. The objective of this design is to have a very sociable and convenient way to eat meals.
This design could also form the basis of a new type of adventure tourism. The ability to travel large distances quickly and safely and have shallow draft is a real feature. The world has numerous exotic places that only a vessel like this can access.
