Whats New: Young 38

The Young 38 was born out of a desire to create a supremely manageable yacht in all areas of performance and ease of ownership. The project was initiated by Rod Skellet (former Australian Super 30 champion) after experiences competing in the 2002 Transpac race. Since that time YYD ltd and Rod have been developing a new design/concept that pushes forward into a new area of the yachting marketplace.

The concept for the Young 38 was to create a yacht that could fit into a 40’shipping container on its own road trailer complete with a 2 piece mast. The yacht is very narrow with a very flat hard bilged hull shape and has a retracing/canting keel and removable ruder box. The yacht can be launched using a boat ramp or single point lift system. The Young 38 is designed to be crewed by 4 people so the entire program of shipping a yacht to any location in the world including crew costs is minimal allowing the owner to compete in a variety of regattas as and offshore races at a fraction of the costs normally associated with a vessel this size.

Sailing the Young 38 will be very exciting; the hull shape is designed to plane downwind and carry its sail area upwind thanks to the canting keel. Lateral resistance is provided by dihedral wings attached to the bulb keel. The interior can be set up for weekend cruising as needed. The exterior is very sleek with teak decks flush fitting bowsprit, recessed furling drum and under deck control lines to cockpit winches.
