The Bull 7000 started as a direct result of an article featured in a European boating magazine. In 1992 Greg received so many enquires for the Bull 7000 design that before long he had 7 deposits paid to supply boats and literally had to take the “bull by the horns” and Greg Young Marine Ltd was created in 1993.
The Bull 7000 was built as a production trailer yacht (The phrase sports yacht hadn’t been invented yet). It was designed as a cruising yacht first and foremost that could be sailed by two people and could accommodate two adults and two children. It was also designed to race with 3 crew and a big emphasis was put into designing a lot of form stability and having a low centre of gravity. The hull shape is very contemporary even by today’s standards. With its Open class style hull shape, the Bull 7000 is still one of the fastest reaching sports yachts available.
The Bull 7000 is still one of world’s few true cruiser/racers this size. Some of the Bull 7000 features:
The first 16 Bull 7000s were built in NZ, most were exported. In 1995 Greg was approached by one of the largest producers of dinghies in Europe (Topper International) to build the Bull 7000 under licence. By 1996 Topper International had lengthened the Bull 7000 to 7.5m and was in full production in the UK. Some 50 odd Bull 7000s were built and there are Bull 7000s sailing in all parts of Europe. In the UK there is an active class association www.bull7000.org.uk and a new class builder is due to be announced in 2008.
